Software

Below I list some of the most common and secure solutions that helps you make the work done. For more advanced advices feel free to contact me. I gather guides and introductions from all over the Internet and some I even make myself. I aim toward the academical work and techniques that is helpful for students and teachers.

Microsoft Word

It should not need any introduction. This software is probably known to everyone who can use a computer. But many scholars and students are not aware of the advanced possibilities contained in Word.

Scholars Aid

Great software – my ‘most-in-use’ software! Scholar’s Aid keeps bibliographical data and notes together, for the very good reason that scholars always need to keep their notes linked to the sources from which those notes were made. Indeed, in academic writing, scholars constantly support their argument by reference to the sources on which they have worked. Thus, in directly quoting from one of these sources, or in making reference to another’s ideas, rigorous academic scholarship demands accurate and detailed citation of those original sources.

Google stuff

Google is NOT just a search-engine, but a new Internet-culture offering varies of online ’software’-possibilities. The best advice I can give is GET A GOOGLE ACCOUNT. The one login combines your personal use of all the different functionalities. I only present some of the most useful, but there are many more. See all

  • Advance your everyday Google searches
By setting up your Google account the search-engine can get more specific informations for you e.g. local informations.
  • Google Alerts and Reader
This is useful for scholars and researchers that want to monitor a certain research field which can be defined according to several keywords. Google Alerts is an advanced searching that Google keeps running in a frequency of your choice. In this way you stay updated to you whatever is your interest, fx. your research-field. The trick is to give in the right keywords. Google Reader is a RSS-feed organizer that serves you with news from all the Websites you often visit. With Google Reader you do not have to spend time visiting them all. The news come to you and you save a lot of time.
  • Google Mail (gMail)
This mail-system makes your Outlook look useless! It is an online mail-controller, that can gather and organize more mail-accounts e.g. business and private, keeping track of contacts and many many other great functions (also IMAP). Works also very well with Google Calendar.
  • Google Scholars
This is a special search-engine for scholars looking for biographies, journals and other stuff. It even count footnotes.
  • Google Docs
This is an online office-software package. This could for some people substitute there Microsoft Office (Google also offers the free Office: StarOffice, as a part of their Google Pack). But brilliant features in Google Docs are, that you can share documents and e.g. co-work on documents where more writers write in the same document (or just showing docs public, this could work as a website). This can also be done with spreadsheets or PowerPoints. Another great feature is that you can show PowerPoints online. Imagine you have people on the phone or on Skype – you send a like which turns there monitor into your presentation! Nice feature.
  • Google Pack
A software package offered by Google full of free software developed by google and others.
